We all wait with bated breath to hear about Apple’s new offerings tomorrow (September 9th 2014). Tim Cook will present at the Flint Center for the Performing Arts in Cupertino, CA the two highly anticipated new versions of the iPhone; the 4.7 inch and the 5.5 inch phablet. In an attempt to play catch-up with its rival, Samsung, in the arena of oversized smartphones, the Apple’s phablet has been a long time coming.

Not only will the larger size and added “curviness” of the the iPhone 6 be part of the evolution, but also the expectation of its NFC technology (Near Field Communication) that will allow users tap-to-pay ability. Reports that Apple has negotiated with Visa, Mastercard and American Express for its payment plans consolidate this expectation.

The addition of an ultra-durable sapphire crystal screen which is pretty much unscratchable, is a feature that perhaps excites me more than the others, after having ruined more than one of my past iPhones by throwing my keys into my purse with the phone or dropping my phone on concrete.

Rumors also abound of the release of the “iWatch” – Apple’s wearable offering that may possibly steal the iPhone 6’s thunder. It will include fitness and health capabilities (Healthkit app) such as tracking of pulse, heart rate, blood pressure, sleep patterns and other stats with its speculated 10 sensors – accelerometer, gyroscope, altimeter, compass, heart-rate monitor, pulse oximeter, among others.

The iWatch is rumored to also boast the NFC chip for mobile payments and the sapphire crystal face. Competing with the various wearable offerings released by Samsung, Sony, LG and Motorola, the iWatch is allegedly being touted to the pillars of the fashion world as a fashion accessory as well as a technological revolution.

I believe, if anyone can, Apple can bring the iWatch into the mainstream consumer market. I, for one, look forward to the TV commercials that Apple will undoubtedly conjure up to propel the iWatch into the media and consumer arena.

Apple design guru, Jony Ive states that Switzerland “should be worried”, meaning this watch has some serious sex appeal to it as well as functionality. Will it come in a men’s and women’s version? We think so. Will it rival the prestige of a Rolex, I think not! Still, having to wait until 2015 to own one, is going to be tough.

After many relatively unimpressive iPhone releases, the iPhone 6 may be a big step forward in the evolution of Apple’s line of smartphones;  but, if I were to hazard a guess at whether it will be remembered 10 years from now as a revolutionary advancement, I think not.

As for iWatch, that may be a different story altogether.
